It turns out that a security update done over FireFox and Google Chrome can actually hurt your privacy rather than enhance it. The software hopes to delete all cookies that are trying to be put on your computer and clear cache at the end of every browsing session. This will stop you from being tracked via cookies, and having an indelible source of your browsing history from the cache service, both of which could compromise your privacy.
Once the product was tested however, it seems that it was only detrimental on one’s privacy settings. The privacy product that was supposed to only stop collecting cookies and other identifying bits of data, but according to some tester’s studies, it actually collects MORE of that data!
Through empirical studies, the researchers have found that the software actually stores identifying information like passwords, log-in names, and browsing histories in the central data base of your computer, the hard drive.
This hard drive seems like it would be secure, but for an experienced hacker, nothing is too secure. Hackers can access your hard drive through your IP address, which is completely visible for everyone. Your IP address is like a virtual nametag that shows your browsing history, and among other things, your real-life location. Obviously you can see how this is a problem to have this public while surfing online!
There are ways to hide this IP address and make yourself more secure online. First of all, there are some quick fixes that can be done to your privacy more secure. In your browser settings, try making cookies banned from your computer, and clear your cache as often as possible. This will stop your system from being bogged down with all sorts of identifying information and stuff you thought you deleted.
If that doesn’t work, or if you just wish to bolster your security, try using a change IP proxy. These do as their name says, they will change your IP address and make you completely untraceable and anonymous on the Internet. There are two types of these proxies to choose from.
A software-based proxy is often fee-based but very cheap, and they are run from a program on your computer. These are often higher quality and offer encryption services that a web-based proxy would not offer. These are run from the Internet and are often slow and unsafe.
